Antique binoculars can be one of the most treasured keepsakes that can pass from generation to generation. Years ago, my father received a pair of binoculars that my grandfather had purchased in Germany in World War II. The frame and casing were composed of solid brass, adding quite a bit of weight to the glasses, but ensuring that they would stand up to the rigors of heavy use. During a camping trip in my youth, I decided to borrow these without my father’s permission. Inevitably, they were lost and I have been lamenting the fact ever since. Until recently, I though my precious antique binoculars were gone forever.

While browsing on the Internet at an auction site, I happened upon a pair that looked remarkably similar to the ones I had known in my youth. Then I realized they were the same (not the same, exact pair, of course, but the same make and model nevertheless). I snatched up the antique binoculars in a hurry and awaited anxiously their arrival.

Upon receiving them, I was not disappointed. I polished them with fervor and then took them outside for a trial run. Remarkably, the view was crystal-clear and the lenses showed no sign of distortion. I was elated. I packaged them up nicely and waited, for Christmas was just around the corner.

When my father opened up his presents on Christmas morning, we all knew that nothing else he had received could come close to the importance that was given to the antique binoculars. He, just as I had done, ran outside to try them out as was astonished at their clarity and durability. After he came back inside, he placed them back in their box and sat looking at them for a while. He then stood, approached my son, and handed the box to him. With a smile, we knew the torch, the antique binoculars, had been passed on.
