The Composition and Use of a Binoculars Microscope

A binoculars microscope is usually described as a compound microscope with two eyepieces that create a viewing angle directed down toward a single optical channel and objective lens. These are different from stereo microscopes, which have a separate optical channel for each eye.

It is generally agreed that there are four main parts of a binoculars microscope. The first is the base. This is the largest part as serves as the foundation of the binoculars microscope. It is usually very heavy, and sometimes is weighted with additional material to prevent the device from tipping over. The second critical part of a binoculars microscope is the stage. It is in this area where the sample is placed for viewing. In most cases, a light is mounted beneath the stage and pointed upward or it is mounted above the stage and directed down. The third main part of the microscope is the arm. The arm connects the base and its adjacent apparatuses to the viewfinders. It is usually constructed in an “L” shape, with a slightly obtuse angle at the joint. The final major part of the microscope is the set of stage adjustment knobs. On some devices there can be up to seven different knobs. These are used to move the stage up and down, to select the different magnifying lenses, and to move them toward and away from the specimen.

A binoculars microscope is used slightly different from comparable devices. There are a couple rules of thumb. First, when you place the specimen on the stage the magnification should be on the lowest setting. This will allow the broadest view of the sample and will prevent the sample from coming into contact with the lens, possibly scratching the lens. It is also suggested that you use the focal lens of your dominant eye to aid in proper visualization.
